Questions for individuals receiving disability in Illinois.?

I am 41 years old and dealing with a number of health issues. During a recent hospital stay, two physicians suggested I file for disability as my condition will get worse. I was devastated; I have worked non-stop since I was 15, often multiple jobs not because I had to but because I enjoyed the interaction with folks. I am trying to prepare myself for what to expect when I apply (eventually I will have no choice) so I can be prepared as possible. How is income determined? I am worried about being able to pay my necessary bills – rent, utilities, Health Insurance, groceries. I would like to correspond with anyone who has gone through this process and can tell me how it works, what to expect, etc. Thanks.

You can apply on line http://www.socialsecurity.gov/

They just ask a few basic questions. Within a few days, they will set up a meeting with a representative from your area. You can arraign to go in person to their office, or do it over the phone. The Representative will ask you about your conditions, if you are working, work history, and a few other questions. The Rep will determine if you are eligible for SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance), and/or SSI (Supplemental Security Income) which is for people with low or no income, and limited assets. If you have been working non stop for 25 years, you paid enough FICA, or Social Security taxes, to qualify for SSDI. If you have no income and assets under $2000 (excluding home, furnishings, 1 car, personal effects), you may qualify for additional SSI.

You will be well served to first understand how it works. 70% are denied at application because they do not research and understand the process. SSA does not necessary uses common sense, logic, or speak in common language. They are a government agency and use “Lawyer speak”. They do everything STRICTLY by the book.

Here is a very good forum with people going through, or have went through the system, Attorneys representing clients, and even former SSA workers that can give you tons of help and advice. http://ssdfacts.com/forum/
