short term health insurance
Applying for short Term Health Insurance for myself, but wife is pregnant.?

I’ve recently gone through a job change. In order to Have Health Insurance for my wife, I need to pay for a COBRA. In order to keep things cheap, I want to keep just her on COBRA, and get short term health for myself until the insurance for my new job will kick in. However, I am getting denied health insurance because they ask the question “Are you or your spouse currently pregnant?” I don’t see why it matters if my wife is pregnant when it is just me applying for insurance. Can somebody explain this to me? Also, does anyone know if I am legally obligated to answer that question truthfully? I don’t see how it is any of their business if my wife is pregnant.

Well, while pregnant, your wife is flat out uninsurable on a new private policy.

I can’t tell you why they care if YOU are.

You are NOT legally obligated to answer the question at all. But if you don’t answer it, they will not insure you. They are not legally obligated to offer you a policy.

However, if you LIE, that’s a criminal act -insurance fraud – and it can void your coverage retroactively. And it’s punishable in all 50 states by fines and possible jail time. So, what’s the point?

If you don’t want to let a Health Insurance Company be part of your business, don’t do business with them. Flat out. It’s a two way street, and it’s up to YOU if you want to do business with them.
